Blastocystis

Blastocystis is a parasite of the single celled phylum Heterokontophyta variety. There are several different species of Blastocystis that can infect humans and animals.

The parasite is so prevalent that it can infect humans, birds, farm animals, rodents, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and even cockroaches.

The parasite in humans has often in the past been refered to as blastocystis hominis, which implies one kind of species, but in fact there are a few different strains of blastocystis that can infect humans.

Infection of the parasite causes a condition know as Blastocystosis.

Symptoms of Blastocystosis

The most common symptoms are:

• constipation
• abdominal pain
• diarrhea
• fatigue
• weight loss
• flatulence

Less common symptoms are:

• Arthritic symptoms and joint pain
• Headaches and depression
• Skin Rashes
• Intestinal inflammation

There has been some tests on mice with weak immune systems who were infected with the parasite and the symptoms were intestinal inflammation, altered bowel habits, lethargy and death.

Determining if you have the parasite is difficult, and the only real way to know is via a test done by the doctors on a portion of your stool.

Modern medicine does have several methods of treating the Blastocystis parasite with combinations of powerful chemicals, which may or may not work.
