The Journey To Good Health - Part 1
The following series of articles will outline possible changes that may occur to a person as they transition from their old unhealthy ways, to healthy habits.
The Beginning, The Change
It is well known among marketing folk that most people will stay on their current path, no matter how un-contructive it may be, until they experience pain or discomfort, which then prompts then to evaluate their situation by searching for knowledge, and then possibly making a change.
This well known piece of human psychology has been exploited by marketing companies for many years by making people feel insecure, or making then feel they have a 'need' that can be fulfilled by their product. Hence we have super fit people drinking Cola, dressed in bikinis and swimmers, on the beach dancing. Unfortunately last time I drank Cola that didn't happen.
The same also applies to many other facets of our lives, including health. Most people are only too happy to continue eating meat 3 times a day, smoking cigarettes, and drinking alcohol, while they are young and their bodies have strength, all while ignoring the health warnings that surround them. Unfortunately the effects of these unhealthy habits may not surface for years, hence hiding the true damage that is being done.
Of course if they could shift their habits immediately and feel the difference in their health and energy levels, these people would only be too happy to stay with the healthy ways and relish the extra energy, lack of sickness, nice complexion, balanced weight and clear mind that goes hand in hand with a healthy way of life. But unfortunately the transition to the healthy way, involves discipline, possible physical symptoms, strange comments from family and friends, withdrawal etc.
"A truly strong person does not need the approval of others any more than a lion needs the approval of sheep."
Vernon Howard
But when things start to go wrong, when cancer arrives, when the person accidentally sees scenes from an abattoir, when a loved one dies in a car crash and the driver was drinking, when a pain occurs that is greater than the perceived pain for making the change, then the change becomes possible.
Of course not all people need a tragedy to change, there has always existed people capable of changing with almost no apparent trigger apart from a little information, but these people are not the masses, they are the free thinkers who make up the minority, and if the word was full of them then consumerism could not exist and capitalism would be about making products based on quality, not price. Nevertheless information and knowledge is key to change, whatever camp the person is in.
"The key to change... is to let go of fear."
Rosanne Cash
