Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring chemical that is create by several plants to help defend them from fungus and bacteria, the most well known being red grapes and Japanese knotweed, which is where most of todays supplements extract it from.

Several experiments show that some of the benefits of resveretrol include the slowing of the growth of cancer, prolonging life and also helping to reduce the risk of heart disease. The evidence shows that it may have positive effects on the cells of breast, skin, gastric, colon, esophageal, pancreatic and prostate cancer, and leukemia.

Blood studies have shown however that when taking most Resveratrol supplements in pill form, the Resveratrol is broken down in the intestines and not much is absorbed into the blood. This problem can be overcome however by choosing a liquid version and holding it in the mouth for 1 minute, or by taking 3-5 grams of the SRT-501 formula developed by Sirtris Pharmaceuticals.

People looking to take resveratrol as a supplement would be better off changing to a vegetarian/vegan diet and doing a good colon cleanse. The idea of taking isolated chemicals to avert sickness, yet still maintaining the habits which caused the sickness in the first place is a one way path, that will usually lead to a different kind of sickness down the road. When the body becomes ill it is often an indication that the person needs to change their habits, whether they be diet or lifestyle related.
