Turmeric has been used as a common spice in India and other Asian countries for thousands of years. It is not only an herbaceous perennial plant that brings flavor to our food, but it also provides us with many health benefits making this plant unique. Today on Healthy Living, we’ll share with you the magic of turmeric, introducing its broad applications. Turmeric belongs to the family of Zingiberaceae, or ginger, and its common names are curcumin, Gauri, haldi, and Indian yellow root. It is a warming herb from the root of the Curcuma longa plant that has been harvested throughout the East and has since spread to Australia, Central and South America, and Africa. Turmeric plays an important role in many cultures due to its unique properties. The rich yellow and orange pigment of turmeric was used for dyeing silk and wool in Indian clothing, including the robes worn by Buddhist monks. In terms of the culinary arts, turmeric is not only the main ingredient in curry powder, but is also a natural food coloring agent used in the food industry in such products as canned beverages, baked goods, yogurt and cereals, for example. The principal therapeutic constituent in turmeric is curcumin, which has been known to have powerful antioxidant properties by practitioners of both Chinese and Indian medicine for over thousands of years. Based on scientific research, curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effects compare well to over-the-counter drugs such as Motrin. Next time you need an anti-inflammatory, stop by a health food store and ask for turmeric in extract or capsule form, as it provides all of the benefits of standard medication without the side effects that is normally associated with them. In both Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurveda, turmeric is an overall health tonic which supports improved liver, gallbladder and digestive functions. Today, clinical research has revealed that this warming herb protects liver cells, and its curcumin content is beneficial for treating liver disease. In addition, turmeric has been acknowledged to stimulate the digestive tract and to prevent stomach irritations. It can also boost the production of enzymes that digest sugar and fat. In other words, turmeric can cut fat from the blood which would be beneficial for weight control. Our ancestors have also passed down to us the knowledge that turmeric can also be used as a readily available antiseptic and antibacterial agent for cuts and burns. It is the perfect, effective home remedy! Furthermore, women who experience discomfort during their monthly menstruation might want to try turmeric. It helps ease the pain and regulates its flow. Due to its warming qualities, turmeric is often used to relieve head colds, toothaches, sinusitis, coughs and chest pain. It is also used to ease congestion. Now that we’ve covered some practical benefits of turmeric, let’s move on to recent research studies that show the promising treatment potential of turmeric for many malignant diseases. In the Journal of Arthritis & Rheumatism, researchers found that, due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, curcumin is able to neutralize free radicals, the harmful chemicals that damage healthy cells, thereby bringing pain relief to patients suffering from arthritis, in particular, rheumatoid arthritis. Turmeric is a major ingredient in curry, which is commonly used in Indian cuisine. Research has shown that this spice has the ability to protect against neurodegenerative illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease. In India, where people use turmeric liberally, only 1% of the population over the age of sixty-five developed Alzheimer’s disease, which is the lowest rate of incidence in the world. By comparison, 10% of the population in the same age group in the US developed Alzheimer’s disease. So, adding turmeric to your food on a regular basis is a great protective health measure. For those who need improved heart function and circulation, turmeric may also provide considerable help without any side effects. The curcumin content is said to improve blood vessel health and stimulate the circulatory system. It also serves as a vasodilator which helps regulate blood pressure, thus lessening the risk of heart attack. One other fact is that curcumin may be able to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the body, thus, slowing the progression of atherosclerosis and heart disease. So, it can be seen that turmeric is an important resource for cardiovascular protection. Studies also show that frequent use of turmeric can lower rates of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. Curcumin in turmeric can prevent tumors from forming and even slows the spread of breast cancer cells. Such amazing therapeutic properties are to be found in this plant! Better yet, select organic turmeric from your nearby health food store. To prepare turmeric tea, just pour boiling water to a cup; add turmeric powder, grated ginger, or cardamom pods, and add a little sugar to taste. The amount of each ingredient depends on individual preference. It’s most effective when you take it on an empty stomach.
