Food Labeling

May we suggest reading the label of any product at supermarkets/shops before purchase, as manufacturers can change the ingredients at any time. A detailed list of E-numbers to be checked can be downloaded here

The Vegetarian Society's food labeling scheme, known as the Seedling Symbol, was established in 1969. Since then it has become the most widely recognised and trusted stamp of vegetarian approval anywhere in the world. You will find the symbol on over 2000 products including retail food and drinks, catering supplies and household goods. Caterers, restaurants, shops and bakeries can also be approved through our Food and Drink Guild Scheme. What does it mean?

The seedling symbol has four strict criteria:

1.   Products have to be free of animal flesh, meat or bone stock, animal carcass fats, gelatin, aspic, or any other products resulting from slaughter.

2.   Products and ingredients should not have been tested on animals

3.   Eggs used must be free range

4.   Products must be GMO free

Products must also be free from cross contamination with non vegetarian products/ingredients in the production process.

Veggie Shopping in the UK

1.   Supermarkets
As well as an increasingly huge range of exotic fruit and vegetables on display, almost all supermarkets in the UK now have exclusively vegetarian freezer sections storing vegetarian sausages, bacon, burgers, mince, stir-fry pieces, fillets, pies and other meat alternatives.
http://www.isitveggie.com/  - lists veggie food in all supermarkets and veggie food for different well-known brands.

For a more detailed list of a few selected veggie products in Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, click here (Veggie food in supermarkets.xls). There are many products available in all supermarkets!

2.   Wholesalers

Retail wholesalers who sell health food and vegetarian/vegan products to the retail market and also direct to consumers.  Some of them open for 'cash and carry' and some will deliver.
